Private Pay at Legacy Counseling

At Legacy Counseling, we operate as a private pay practice, meaning clients pay for sessions directly rather than using in-network insurance. We take this approach because it allows us to offer care that is flexible, tailored, and confidential—without the limitations or requirements imposed by insurance companies.

Private pay ensures that you and your therapist choose the goals, frequency, and length of therapy based entirely on your needs. There are no mandatory diagnoses, no approvals or session caps, and no clinical information shared outside the therapy room. This protects your privacy while giving you full control over your treatment experience.

We believe your mental health deserves thoughtful, individualized support. Private pay allows us to provide high-quality care grounded in your values, culture, and long-term wellbeing.

Using Out-of-Network (OON) Benefits

Although we are not in-network with insurance companies, many of our clients use their Out-of-Network (OON) benefits to receive partial reimbursement for therapy.

The process is simple:

You pay for your session at the time of service, and we provide a detailed invoice—known as a superbill—which you can submit to your insurance. Depending on your plan, you may be reimbursed for a percentage of the session fee once your out-of-network deductible is met.

To check your OON benefits, we recommend asking your insurance provider:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health coverage?
  • What percentage of the session cost will be reimbursed?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible and how much of it has been met?
  • How do I submit a superbill for reimbursement?

Many clients find that their benefits make therapy more affordable than expected—and we’re happy to guide you through each step of the reimbursement process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do you offer a sliding scale or reduced-rate options?

We occasionally offer limited reduced-rate spots depending on clinician availability. Please reach out to inquire about current openings.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept credit/debit cards, HSA (Health Savings Account) cards, and FSA (Flexible Spending Account) cards.

How do I know if my insurance will reimburse me?

The best way is to call your insurance company and ask about Out-of-Network mental health benefits. We can also direct you to tools that help estimate reimbursement amounts.

How often will I receive reimbursement?

This varies by insurance provider. Some reimburse monthly, while others process claims every few weeks. Once your superbill is submitted, your insurance company will let you know their timeline.

Do I need a diagnosis to receive reimbursement?

Insurance companies typically require a mental health diagnosis code in order to process OON claims. This is optional for therapy itself, but required only if you choose to submit to insurance for reimbursement. Your therapist can discuss this with you in more detail.

Do you submit claims for me?

We do not submit claims directly. However, we provide all the documentation you need to submit claims easily and successfully.

If I switch insurance, can I still work with my therapist?

Yes. Since we are private pay and out-of-network, your care does not depend on your insurance carrier. You can continue seeing your therapist regardless of plan changes.
